The Borromean Islands

Palaces, gardens and island life on Lake Maggiore

Set on the calm waters of Lake Maggiore, the Borromean Islands have long been admired for their refined beauty, elegant architecture and intimate island atmosphere. This guided day tour offers a relaxed and immersive way to experience the archipelago, combining art, gardens and everyday island life.

We depart from Stresa by boat and begin the day on Isola Bella, where we visit the 17th-century Palazzo Borromeo and stroll through its remarkable Baroque gardens, a harmonious blend of architecture and nature. Our journey continues to Isola dei Pescatori, the only inhabited island of the archipelago. Here, we enjoy time to wander through its narrow lanes and take a relaxed lunch break, soaking in the authentic rhythm of island life. In the afternoon, we reach Isola Madre, the largest and greenest of the islands. We explore its romantic English-style botanical garden, rich in exotic plants, and visit the palace, once the Borromeo family’s residence, known for its historic marionette theatre.

The tour concludes with a boat ride back to Stresa, after approximately six hours of exploration at an unhurried pace. The order of the island visits may vary depending on logistics and availability. This experience is designed for small groups, with a minimum of two and a maximum of six participants. For larger groups or families travelling with children under six, please contact us for further details and tailored arrangements.
