BRESCIA'S UNESCO SITES - THE ROMAN CAPITOLIUM AND SANTA GIULIA MUSEUM
Brescia is the place that we like to call “Italy’s most underrated city”, it’s considered a place of a thousand faces and many surprises. For example, did you know that Brescia is a UNESCO site? In fact very few people know this.
The tour will give us the chance to discover the most important part of the city’s cultural heritage: the Archeological Park of Roman Brescia and the complex of San Salvatore – Santa Giulia, both included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 2011.
Our tour will start right in front of the ruins of the ancient Roman Capitolium, the oldest and most significant temple of the ancient “Brixia”, as the the city used to be called in the past. Here we will begin the outdoor visit of the site, learning about the ancient Roman past of Brescia by walking through this archeological site, northern Italy’s largest and richest in discovery. We will then walk on the “Corridoio Unesco” or UNESCO Corridor, an magnificent outdoor path, about 1 km long, inaugurated on June 2023, to reach the Santa Giulia Museum.
This is a unique museum in Italy and Europe and it was created into an ancient Benedictine convent that dates back to the VII century, built by the last king of the Langobards, Desiderius. Here you’ll find a large collection of items recounting the history of Brescia from the origins to the Renaissance, works of art, a building of great importance and the ancient houses of the Roman time, all very well preserved. You can also marvel at the gorgeous “Coro delle Monache” or Nun’s Choir, the fascinating Cross of Desiderius and much much more.
Are you ready to make a great journey into the past to discover the glorious Roman and Langobard history of our wonderful Brescia?
